If you bought Minecraft from Minecraft.net and launched it through the Java-based launcher, you're on Java Edition. What are Minecraft shaders?
A shader pack is a set of rendering rules that replaces Minecraft's default lighting, shadows, and reflections with a more realistic or stylized look. It changes how light behaves in the world — not the blocks, models, or gameplay themselves.
Shaders typically add:
- Directional shadows that move as the sun and moon shift
- Reflective water and, in some packs, other reflective surfaces
- Volumetric fog, god rays, and clouds with depth
- Warmer or cooler color grading depending on time of day and biome
- Ambient occlusion, which darkens corners and tight spaces for a more three-dimensional feel
Shaders generally don't change hitboxes, block behavior, crafting, or combat. A few packs adjust fog distance or sky color aggressively enough to affect visibility, which is why competitive and PvP-focused players often stick to lighter shaders or skip them entirely.

A texture pack (such as the Nostalgia Texture Pack or Baby Mobs Texture Pack) can't add shadows on its own. A shader pack can't change what a block looks like on its own. Resource packs and shader packs can run together on Java, since one changes textures and the other changes lighting.
How Minecraft shaders work
Shaders intercept the game's rendering pipeline, the sequence your GPU follows to turn block data into pixels, and add extra rendering passes for shadows, reflections, and lighting on top of what vanilla Minecraft normally draws.
Each extra pass costs GPU time. A shadow pass alone means the game renders the world's geometry a second time from the sun's perspective just to calculate where shadows fall. Add reflections, volumetric fog, and screen-space effects, and you're asking the GPU to do several times more work per frame than vanilla rendering requires.
This is why the same PC can run vanilla Minecraft at 300 FPS and drop to 40-60 FPS with a demanding shader pack enabled. The CPU still matters for world generation and simulation distance, but the shadow, reflection, and lighting calculations that define a shader's visual style are almost entirely GPU-bound. There's no single "best" shader; the right pick depends on your hardware first, and your visual taste second. Start from what your GPU can realistically handle, then pick a style within that tier.
- Integrated graphics: MakeUp - Ultra Fast or Sildur's Vibrant Shaders on its Basic/Low preset. Both are built to cut shadow resolution and volumetric effects down to a minimum so they run on hardware with no dedicated GPU.
- Entry-level dedicated GPU: Complementary Reimagined on its reduced/medium settings, or Sildur's Vibrant on a higher preset. This is the point where soft shadows and basic reflections become affordable.
- Mid-range GPU: Complementary Reimagined or Unbound, and BSL Shaders. Complementary tends to hold FPS better; BSL leans toward warmer, more natural color grading and water. Both are actively maintained.
- High-end GPU: Rethinking Voxels, SEUS Renewed, or SEUS PTGI. These push heavier lighting and volumetric detail and expect a stronger GPU to stay smooth SEUS Renewed and SEUS PTGI are separate builds with different performance costs, not one interchangeable product, so check which one a guide is actually referring to.
- Vanilla-friendly look, any tier: Kappa Shader or Complementary's lighter presets, which enhance lighting without pushing the world toward a different art style.

Don't treat these performance levels as fixed FPS numbers; actual results depend on your resolution, render distance, resource packs, and the shader's own settings. This is a general guide, not a minimum-spec chart. Mojang and shader creators don't publish official minimum GPU models for third-party packs, and Minecraft's own base requirements are separate from what a shader pack needs on top of them. If a shader runs poorly, lower shadow resolution and volumetric effects before assuming your hardware can't handle shaders at all.
Best Minecraft shaders for low-end PCs
A lightweight shader keeps its cost down mainly by cutting three things: shadow resolution, reflection quality, and volumetric effects fog, clouds, god rays.
What makes a shader "low-end friendly":
- Lower shadow map resolution, which softens shadow edges but costs far less GPU time
- No or minimal screen-space reflections
- Reduced or disabled volumetric fog and clouds
- Simplified or disabled ambient occlusion
- No depth of field or motion blur, which are cheap visually but still cost frame time
On integrated graphics or older laptop GPUs, pair a light shader Sildur's Basic, MakeUp - Ultra Fast, or Complementary's low preset with a lower render distance — 8-12 chunks rather than 16+ and disable clouds and particles in the shader's own config screen. That combination usually matters more for FPS than any single graphics driver setting.
Exact FPS depends too much on your specific CPU, GPU, and settings to promise a number here test a shader's low preset first before assuming it won't run.
Minecraft shaders on Java Edition
Java is where the shader pack ecosystem originally developed, and it's still where the widest selection of packs exists.
Two things you need before a shader pack does anything:
- A shader loader Iris or OptiFine. Neither one is a shader itself; both are the software that reads a shader pack's code and applies it to the game.
- A compatible Minecraft version, since shader packs, loaders, and Minecraft itself all need to match closely enough to work together.
Iris is an open-source shader loader for Fabric and NeoForge. Its own site describes it as including Sodium, a separate rendering-optimization mod, for the best performance — the two are built to work together rather than compete. Iris supports Fabric on 1.16.5 and above, and NeoForge on 1.21.1 and above. It doesn't support plain Forge, though the unofficial Oculus port paired with the Embeddium performance mod brings similar functionality to older Forge versions.
OptiFine is a long-running, all-in-one mod that bundles shader support with performance tweaks, connected textures, custom entity models, zoom, and other features in a single install. It works standalone, without needing Fabric or NeoForge, which makes setup simpler on its own but it doesn't get along well with many other mods, since it rewrites core rendering code that other mods also rely on.
Sodium makes vanilla rendering faster; it doesn't add shaders on its own. Iris depends on it for rendering; OptiFine uses its own separate optimization code instead.

Neither is universally better. If you're running Fabric or NeoForge mods anyway, or you want the best FPS with shaders on, Iris plus Sodium is the stronger pick. If you want the simplest single install with extra cosmetic features and don't plan to run other mods, OptiFine still does the job, though check that the shader pack you want lists OptiFine support specifically, since some newer packs have moved to Iris-only.
How to install Minecraft shaders
Installing shaders with Iris
- Install Fabric or NeoForge for your Minecraft version using the official installer from fabricmc.net or neoforged.net.
- Download Iris from Modrinth or CurseForge, matching the exact Minecraft version and mod loader.
- Place the Iris .jar file in your .minecraft/mods folder.
- Launch Minecraft through the Fabric or NeoForge profile.

Installing shaders with OptiFine

Minecraft shader compatibility
A shader that worked last month can stop working after a Minecraft update because several pieces have to line up at once:
- Minecraft version
- Iris or OptiFine version
- The shader pack's own supported-version list
- Fabric or NeoForge version
- Any other installed mods and resource packs
- GPU driver version
Before installing, check the shader pack's page on Modrinth, CurseForge, or the creator's own site for its listed supported Minecraft versions and loader. Most shader creators update within a few weeks of a new Minecraft release, but not always immediately, so running the newest snapshot can mean waiting for shader support to catch up.

Exact setting names differ between shader packs, but shadow resolution and volumetric effects are almost always the two biggest levers.
Minecraft shaders troubleshooting
- Shaders not showing up in the list: Confirm the .zip is in the shaderpacks folder, not a subfolder inside it, and that you're launching through the correct profile (Fabric/NeoForge for Iris, the OptiFine profile for OptiFine).
- Iris not working: Check that Fabric API is installed if the shader or a companion mod requires it, and that the Iris build matches both your Minecraft version and loader version exactly.
- OptiFine not working: Reinstall using the installer that matches your exact Minecraft version — OptiFine builds are version-specific and don't tolerate mismatches well.
- Black screen or crash on enabling a shader: Update your GPU driver first. Outdated drivers are one of the most common causes of shader crashes. If that doesn't help, try a lighter shader pack to rule out a hardware ceiling.
- Flickering or broken shadows/water: Often a shader-version mismatch or a conflict with a resource pack that changes the same textures the shader references. Try disabling other resource packs to isolate the cause.
- Shader works on one Minecraft version but not the next: Expected — check the shader's supported-version list before updating Minecraft, and hold off on updating if the pack hasn't caught up yet.

- Mod conflict: OptiFine is the more common source of conflicts since it rewrites rendering code many other mods also touch. If you're running several mods, Iris on Fabric/NeoForge tends to cause fewer conflicts.
Reinstalling Minecraft rarely fixes a shader problem — it's almost always a version mismatch, a driver issue, or a mod conflict instead.
Shaders and mods

RTX and Vibrant Visuals are not the same feature, and Vibrant Visuals did not replace RTX outright — RTX (Nvidia's real-time path tracing) remains a separate, GPU-specific feature on Bedrock's Windows version, while Vibrant Visuals is Mojang's own broader lighting overhaul aimed at running across far more devices without requiring ray-tracing hardware. What are Minecraft Vibrant Visuals?
Vibrant Visuals is Mojang's official graphics overhaul for Bedrock Edition's Render Dragon engine. It adds directional lighting and shadows that shift with the sun and moon, reflective water, emissive textures (things like glowing ores actually glowing), and volumetric fog and clouds without requiring a separate download, shader loader, or specific ray-tracing GPU.
Per Mojang's own Vibrant Visuals page, supported platforms are Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Android, iOS, and PC. Mobile and PC have hardware thresholds on top of that — Android needs an Adreno 640, Mali-G68, Mali-G77, Eclipse 530, or better GPU; iOS needs an A12 chip or newer (or Apple silicon); PC needs to be running Minecraft on DX12. It isn't currently supported on ChromeOS, Fire OS, or Nintendo Switch. Mojang has continued expanding the supported-device list since launch, so treat this as the current picture rather than a permanently fixed one, and check your device's Video settings — if it's supported, the Vibrant Visuals option shows up there.
Vibrant Visuals is a Bedrock feature. It has no relationship to Java shader packs beyond solving a similar visual problem: you can't load an Iris or OptiFine shader pack into Bedrock, and Vibrant Visuals doesn't run on Java.
Is Vibrant Visuals available on Minecraft Java Edition?
As of August 2026, no — it hasn't shipped as a finished Java feature. Mojang confirmed in February 2026 that Java development is ongoing, tied to a renderer migration from OpenGL to Vulkan, and Vulkan support is now being tested through Java snapshots as part of that work. Until it ships, Java players get equivalent lighting upgrades through shader packs loaded via Iris or OptiFine instead.
Minecraft shaders on Android and Minecraft PE
The official Minecraft app on Android (Minecraft Mod APK) and iOS (iPhone & iPad) is Bedrock Edition. Java Edition isn't officially offered as an Android or iOS app, though unofficial third-party Java launchers exist outside Mojang's support. Keep that distinction in mind and most of the mobile shader confusion clears up on its own.
- Can Minecraft shaders work on Android? Java shader packs (Iris, OptiFine format) don't run on the official Android app, because that app is Bedrock, not Java. What Android players get instead is Vibrant Visuals, on devices that meet its GPU requirements.
- Can Iris Shaders run on Android? No. Iris is a Fabric/NeoForge mod for Java Edition, and the official Android app runs Bedrock.
- Can OptiFine run on Android? No, for the same reason OptiFine only works with Java Edition.
- Can Java shaders work on Minecraft PE? No. Minecraft PE (Pocket Edition) was the older name commonly used for the mobile version; today, Android and iOS are part of Minecraft Bedrock Edition, which doesn't support Java shader packs or Java mod loaders.
- What are Vibrant Visuals on Android? The same Bedrock graphics mode available on other supported platforms, gated by GPU: Mojang lists Adreno 640, Mali-G68, Mali-G77, Xclipse 530, or better as the requirement.
- Which Android devices support Vibrant Visuals? Any device with one of the GPUs listed above. Mojang has expanded this list since launch, so check your device's Video settings directly — if it's supported, the Vibrant Visuals option appears there.
- Can Bedrock visual packs be installed on Android? Vibrant Visuals itself is a built-in graphics mode, not an installable pack. Cosmetic content sold through the Marketplace can add texture and resource-pack-style customization, but not a Java-style shader pack.
- Can .mcpack files be used on Bedrock? Yes — mcpack is Bedrock's format for resource packs, behavior packs, and worlds, and it works on Android the same way it does on other Bedrock platforms.
- Can Java Edition run on Android through a separate launcher? Unofficial third-party Java launchers for Android exist, but they aren't supported by Mojang, don't officially run Iris or OptiFine, and quality and legality vary by app. This guide doesn't cover installing one.
A modified or cracked Bedrock APK does not turn the game into Java Edition, and downloading one to "unlock" Java shaders is both a security risk and unrelated to how the two editions actually work.
Safe places to download Minecraft shaders
Prefer the shader creator's official page or established platforms — Modrinth, CurseForge, irisshaders.dev for Iris, optifine.net for OptiFine, and the Minecraft Marketplace for Bedrock cosmetic content. Even on established platforms, check the project owner, the file type, and the download page itself before opening anything — an established platform reduces risk, it doesn't eliminate the need to look.
Warning signs of a fake or unsafe download:
- A download button that opens a different site than the one you clicked from
- An .exe file where a .zip or .jar is expected
- Shader packs offered as a modified/cracked Minecraft client
- Password-protected archives with the password only available after completing a survey or download step
- Installer software instead of a plain file you drag into a folder
- Unofficial APKs claiming to unlock "hidden" Java features on Bedrock
None of that is how legitimate shader packs, Iris, or OptiFine are distributed.
